I was initially suspicious of El Tacorrido. I mean, with a hip, clever name and all, and being in the 78704. Plus, it’s a drive-thru. With a cute little pig for a logo. How authentic could it possibly be? But still, drive-thru menudo? That’s just so convenient!
But when they took my order through the speaker, I was relieved that the person on the other end spoke English with a Spanish accent. And when I asked in advance if they served it with hominy, they said they did (I learned my lesson after Tortilleria Rio Grande #2), so I thought I was in the clear.
There is one major drawback to ordering menudo at a drive-thru. You really don’t know what you’ve got on your plate (or in your bowl, that is) until you get home.
When I brought the containers home, I discovered that although it included lots of honeycomb cuts of meat, in general, the cuts were too big and on the rubbery side.
There was plenty of cilantro and onion, but no jalapeño, and the cilantro also contained too many stems. The tortillas were not memorable, and they could have provided more. The small bowl portion was fairly generous, and although the hominy smelled great, there was barely any of it, and that always makes me sad. The broth was somewhat greasy. It was served with a pig’s foot, so they get bonus points for that! (If that’s your jam.)
